History of The Greenbrier
The Greenbrier resort dates to 1778 as a sulphur springs retreat. The current main hotel was built in 1913. During WWII, the resort served as an internment site for foreign diplomats and then a US Army hospital. A Cold War-era nuclear fallout bunker designed to shelter the US Congress was hidden beneath the property from 1959 until exposed by The Washington Post in 1992; it's now a tour highlight. The Casino Club opened in 2010, making The Greenbrier the first WV resort to offer table gaming. The Caesars retail sportsbook opened after WV legalized sports betting in 2018.
